Peugeot announced that it’s re-entering the compact SUV market with the brand new 4008 crossover. Sales will begin during the first half of 2012, initially concentrating on fast-growing SUV markets like Russiaand China.
The 4008 is 4.3 metres long, 1.8m wide and has a height of 1.6m. Quite compact indeed, and apparently very versatile. The front end features LED daylight running lights that accentuate the new Peugeot front grille with its proud lion emblem. Off-road fans will be delighted by the body sill protectors and prominent wheel arch protector trims, as well as 18-inch alloywheels and a reversing camera. The AWD system has three modes, namely 2WD, AWDand LOCK, which apply in accordance to the prevailing driving conditions.
Some comfort features include a touch-screen satellite navigation system, interior side LED lights for better reading, and a glass panoramic roof for true captive escapism.
Four engines are on the table, starting with a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated one with 85kW of power and 152Nm of torque. Then a 2.0-litre113kW/ 198Nm follows, upped by two diesels in the form of a 1.5 HDi worth 82kW and 270Nm, as well as a 1.8 HDisending off 110kW and 300Nm.
We probably will see the 4008 in South Africa in 2012, if Peugeot can prove a sound business case for it. I don’t see why not.
