AMG will not be producing high-performance diesel engines, according to a report from Autocarmagazine. Despite both Audi and BMW producing very powerful turbo diesel engines, Merc says it’s not interested in entertaining such a notion for its AMG brand.
In an interview with one Ola Kallenius, Chairman of the board of Management at AMG, Autocar ascertained that the main reason for this decision is that diesel just doesn’t have the same performance characteristics exhibited by petrol. These include a lighter block, the sound it makes and throttle response. Instead AMG will concentrate on electric-powered alternatives like the SLS AMG E-Cell.
Of course Audi will disagree, pointing at cars like the bossy Q7 V12 TDI, while BMW recently announced M Performance, with diesels of up to 280kW/ 740Nm of might. Perhaps the company is still sussing out how successful its neighbouring rivals will be, before also jumping into the lake.
