General Motors South Africa (GMSA) has announced that henceforth the popular little Chevrolet Spark will now be manufactured at its Port Elizabeth plant. That’s the same one that makes the Chevrolet Utility and used to handle the HUMMER too. The good news for end consumers is that as a result, prices have now dropped.
“The new price for the entry level model Spark is now R107 500 inclusive of VAT, a reduction in price of 7%,” Malcolm Gauld, GMSA’s Vice President Sales and Marketing. “There is even better news for those that want to go a bit more up market with their trim level with an upgrade to the Spark LS. This model now retails for R116 500 inclusive of VAT, a saving of 9.7% over the imported model.”
Because of this, Spark is now one of the most affordableentry-level cars in its segment, and is thus probably eligible for a further increase in sales figures. Pity that some other local producers haven’t seen it fit to pass on their savings to the consumer. Then they wonder why they aren’t selling any cars.
