Just a couple of weeks after Volkswagen South Africa introduced us to the Golf Cabriolet, its overseas parent has just released the badge’s most powerful drop top. Welcome the Golf GTI Cabriolet, obviously referring to the fact that it’s based on VW’s iconic moniker.

Riding on the same underpantsas the normal Cabriolet, GTI Cabriolet however, shares the same 2.0-litre turbo engine making 155kW and 280Nm of torque at the front wheels, swimming through either a 6-speed manualor a DSG gearbox. It’s said to run from 0 – 100km/h in 6.9 seconds or so, with a top end of 236km/h. With these figures in mind it’s safe to conclude this is the fastest Golf Cabriolet ever.

VW says the top will come off in 9.5 seconds, and can be operated at up to 30km/h. In terms of looks the Cabriolet is GTI by nature, meaning it features the normal black honeycomb front grille with two red strips (classic GTI style), a GTI badge, LED daytime running lights, the same rims, and two separate tailpipes.

We don’t know if VW SA will sell the GTI Cabriolet in Mzansi or not. However, since about 40% of all Golf sales locally are made up of GTI, it would make sense to bring the slahla version as well.
