Finally BMW has entered the 4-door coupe segment with this brand new 6 Series Gran Coupe, which adds to the existing 2-door Coupeand Convertible models. The car is aimed at fellow Germans Mercedes-Benz’s CLS and Audi’s A7 Sportback. It is decked out in the most opulent of items as these pictures attest and features powerful engines befitting a car of its nature.

Measuring 5 metres long and with a wheelbase of 2.97m, the Gran Coupe is massively long. In fact it’s just over a metre longer than the Coupe. What of course sets it apart is that instead of only two passenger entry points, the GC has four. Now at this point you might say “well, the 5 Seriesalso has four doors, what makes this car any different?” A good observation and one BMW probably didn’t do enough to address.

Where the CLS and A7 are clearly different from their E-Class and A6 counterparts, this car has probably not done enough to stand away from the 5 in terms of design. A coupe, even with four doors, should have a much more slanted rear profile and not look so much like its sedan sibling. The other thing is, its rivals feature a boot that opens all the way into the rear glass portion, but this car opens like a conventional sedan.

As far as engines, the GC features most of what the 5 has, that is to say 3.0-litre diesel and petrol turbos, and a 4.4-litre twin turbo V8. The small petrol has 235kWand 450Nm of go, the 640d does 230kW and 630Nm, while the V8 can live with 300kW. An M6 version worth 412kW should be expected, following in the footsteps of the M6 Coupe and Convertible. All these are driven by an 8-speed automatic and the 650i can be had with AWD (all-wheel-drive) in some countries.
