Bentley finally showed the world its smaller V8 engine, months after speculation and rumours began circulating. The new motor is a 4.0-litre V8 unit with two turbos and apparently delivers a 40% improvement in fuel efficiency and corresponding C02 emissions. And if you thought you recognised the figures you’d be spot on…

Because this is the same engine found in the new Audi S6 and S8 but making differing amounts of power. Actually speculation is that it could be the same engine used in the upcoming RS 4 sedan and Avant but of course, with another type of power output. Nevertheless, in the Bentley it produces 373kW at 6000rpm, while peak torque is 660Nm made between 1700rpm and 5000rpm.

Driving all four wheels is an 8-speed automatic gearbox transmission, which is actually rear-wheel-biased. That means while it drives all four wheels, most of the power goes to the rear wheels in normal driving, thus improving handling fun and lowering fuel consumption at the same time. Bentley says the Continental GT V8 will accelerate from 0 – 100km/h in less than 5 seconds and top out at 290km/h. In spite of all this performance, it will supposedly keep going for 800km at a time.

Both GT and GTC models will benefit from this engine. In terms of styling, the car is distinguished by its 20-inch alloys and an optional 21-inch 6-spoke version, a black gloss matrix grille with chrome frame and centre bar, “figure of 8” tailpipes and others. It’s available in 7 exterior colours. Customers, as per usual Bentley style, will be spoilt for choice when it comes to interior leather veneers and other customisationoptions.

The Bentley Continental GT V8 will be unveiled at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroitnext month.
