The automotive market in Mzansi seems very healthy and buoyantindeed, according to the freshest sales figures released today. Over the month of March 2012, a total of 56 110 vehicles were sold, with 38 970 of them being passenger cars. The latter showed an increase of 8.4%compared to the first quarter of 2011. Aprilhowever, is expected to be comparablyquiet due to the many public holidays.
In terms of models, the Toyota Hilux remains king of all types of cars (both light commercial vehicles and passenger cars), selling 3 189 units last month. Volkswagen Polo remains the best-selling passenger car with 2 289 examples sold.
“We are able to better-supply the huge demand for Ranger now and expect consistent customer delivery in the coming months. It has obviously allowed massive growth for our LCV sales (148.8% over February) but importantly, the vast majority of units have been delivered directly to owners through dealers,” said Ford Vice President Marketing, Sales and Service, Dean Stoneley.
Interestingly there’s a new sub-ton bakkie ruler in the form of the Nissan NP200, which edged out the Chevrolet (previously Opel) Corsa Utility for the first time in over 6 years.
President and CEO of Toyota South Africa Dr Johan van Zyl is cautiously optimistic about the months ahead: “We see scope for the South African vehicle market to remain in positive territory, but admittedly this will depend on the impact that rapidly rising energy and transport costs will have on the consumer’s disposable income.”
