2012 MERCEDES-BENZ B-CLASS DRIVEN IN MZANSI

When Mercedes-Benzfirst launched the B-Class in South Africa, they went into previously-uncharteredterritory. MPVs in the premium sector don’t exist actually, so the B-Class never really had competition. The brand new car, just launched here in Mzansi, still does not.

While the old car sold well enough, the market where it plays is quite mature. Some even call it old. Mercedes-Benz already has an image as an old people’s brand, and adding a mama’s car into the mix did no help. In order to attract a younger audience, Merc has had to redesign the car from scratch as part of a new batch of small premium vehicles that include the upcoming 2013 A-Class.

“Mercedes-Benz already has an image as an old people’s brand”

A good job done is probably the best way to describe it. Featuring a front grille with three bold brushed chromelouvers, short overhands, a trapezoidalfront end with sloping LED daytime running lights and a high bonnet for improved pedestrian safety, the B-Class is quite a striking vehicle. The side profile is characterised by three main kinky lines forming the shape of a sharp blade, while the window pillars grow shorter as one progresses towards the rear. This gives it a slanting look, accentuated by small rear windows. Some of the extra-costpackages make it look even cooler, like the Night Package with a sports suspension and smoked 18-inch alloy wheels.

Having grown in size, the B-Class now measures 4.3 metres long, 1.8m wide, 1.6m high and has a wheelbase of 2.7m. One sits higher than in a normal car inside the B, which I suppose is to be expected for its type. Those with back sensitivities will find it easy to get into, as it requires only an easy slide in. nice as this part is, I’ve never been sold on the idea that this car could be as practical as a Chevrolet Orlando or Renault Scenic for instance, at the same time offering a higher level of spec and comfort. My attitude remains the same.

“I’ve never been sold on the idea that this car could be as practical as a Chevrolet Orlando”

The SLS AMG is obviously Mercedes-Benz’s halo model and the rest of the range will employ a few elements from it. For B, these include the circular air vents adorning the dashboard. Don’t try and fold the screen because it’s permanently fixed on top there. The interior in general is roomy and welcoming, very comfortable in a way that befits a Mercedes-Benz of course. With a long list of features and options, one would probably need the whole internet to list them all. But of for interest’s sake, some are worth noting. In fact, no new Merc has ever debuted with as many new features as the B. Like the Eco start/ stopsystem that switches off the engine as soon as the car comes to a full stop, then restarts it automatically when the acceleratorpedal is prodded.

How about the Comandonline feature worth R20 000 extra, which, just as in the C-Class Coupe, one can only use the online function through one’s own Bluetooth connection. Not very clever I must say. Distronic Plusis cool though. While following a car, it keeps a safe distance between the two of you by adjusting your speed to slow down simultaneously with that car. It also has that feature that helps it park itself automatically.

“It also has that feature that helps it park itself automatically”

We got to drive two of the four initial derivatives as they are both immediately available. Interestingly they are both diesel. The B 180 CDI BlueEfficiency and B 200 CDI BlueEfficiencyare on dealership floors as we speak, while the B 180 and B 200 can be seen in a couple of months’ time. Standard in all is a 6-speed manual gearbox, which I didn’t get to drive. But the big news is that Mercedes-Benz has fitted a new 7-speed double clutch called 7G-DCT (Dual Clutch Auto Transmission). The changer is awesomely smooth, yet also gives iotas of sporty feedback when applied with shift paddles behind the steering wheel.

The B 180 CDI is one of only a few appropriately badged cars in the Merc garage as it features an actual 1.8-litre engine! The 4-cylinder with a VTG turbo, common rail technology and direct injection pushes through 80kW between 3200rpm and 4600rpm, paired with 250Nm of torque between 1400rpm and 2800rpm. Entry-level it is, and entry-level it felt while attempting some steeps on the rolling hills around the Durban area. A 0 – 100km/h time of 10.9 seconds is claimed but I suspect it would only be achievable with a quarter tank of fuel on board, while going downhill even. Nevertheless, the quoted average fuel consumption of 4.5 litres per 100km (or a range of about 1 240kmoff a tank) isn’t that far-fetched.

“Big news is that Mercedes-Benz has fitted a new 7-speed double clutch”

Extra punch was however, supplied by the more entertaining B 200 CDI with the same 1.8-litre but more go. At 100kW between 3600rpm and 4400rpm, and 300Nmbetween 1600rpm and 3000rpm, it became clear that this would be the entertaining piece of the day. Indeed it was pushier over those rolling green hills, and the car’s handling in general is quite good too. A fuel claim matching its less potent sibling’s is probably less believable, while 0 – 100km/h is said to be 9.5 seconds.

Previous B sold an average of 97 units a month for six years. With this revamped version, MBSA wishes to dramatically increase that number, perhaps up to 150 per month. Key to this is attracting people below 75 years of age. It’s a much improved car overall. Bigger, safer, faster in some instances, noticeably more upmarket and possibly younger, B-Class shows marked improvement. Will the younger mamasand papas notice though?

MERCEDES-BENZ CLA IS COMING

Mercedes-Benz F800 Concept

The baby Mercedes-Benz CLS will be called the CLA and it’s to be built in Kecskemet, Hungary. This is according to Automotive News Europe. The publication says Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler AG invested €800 million (R8.2 billion) building the plant, which also manufacturers the new B-Class.

The CLA, previously referred to as the CLC, takes the same type of styling as the bigger CLS, but is roughly the size of a C-Class. So it’s really a competitor to the Audi A5 Sportback and the upcoming 2013 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo (GT). Therefore we can expect the same engines to be offered, such as the 1.8-litrebi-turbo with 150kW and possibly (I’d say probably) a CLA 63 AMG with the next-generation turbo engine.

YOUTH PREFER INTERNET OVER DRIVING

A USA study has found that today’s young people aren’t like youth of the past. Ok, we all know that, but what does it mean? It means for one, they don’t drive as much as their forebearsfrom the 1960s or 1970s for instance. It means they’d rather sit behind a computer screen and surf the internet.

And that’s not just Americankids, it’s all over the world, including countries like South Korea, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom. One reason put forward is that with the advent of e-mail, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and the all the rest, youngsters just don’t have as much incentive to go out and meet other young people face to face.

We can think of a number of other reasons too, such as an increased fear of road accidents, the high costs associated with motoring activities (have you seen the price of petrol lately?) and parents who drive their kids around more than ever before.

While these trends may be a little concerning for automakers, it doesn’t mean the youth will stop using cars anytime soon. In fact, in developingcountries like Mzansi, young people can’t wait to get on the road just as soon as they are licenced.

MAPONYA, MOTLANTHE, OPEN SOWETO VOLKSWAGEN

Dr Richard Maponyais probably one of the busiest people over the age of 85. The man who gave us Maponya Mall has now officially opened Soweto Volkswagen, a R30 milliondealership, in partnership with Barloworld Automotive. This is Maponya’s second dealership in two years, following a competitive Toyota franchise.

Most senior in government was Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe who was at hand to help cut the proverbial opening ribbon

“It [the Maponya story] is not merely a rags to riches story,” said Motlanthe, “it is far more than that. It is a symbol of what it meant to be black and to refuse to be defined by arbitrary apartheid laws and the colour of one's skin…Today, through their various projects the Maponya Group is the largestindependent job creator in Soweto, having created thousands of jobs through the Maponya Mall project and many others.”

While this was the official opening, the dealership has actually been in business since December 2011. It sits on an 8 000 square metre motor retail site not far from some serious struggle-era landmarks of Soweto, such as Orlando Stadiumand the Mandela home.

“The opening of Soweto Volkswagen is one of the key milestones in the history of Volkswagen Brand in South Africa that spans over 60 years,” said VW SA MD David Powels. “The process to build a Volkswagen dealership in Soweto began many years ago and was formalised by merging three great brands – Dr Richard Maponya, Volkswagen and Barloworld. Volkswagen is extremely proud to be associated with these brands in the form of Soweto Volkswagen.”

Soweto Volkswagen sells all sorts of VW products, including the best-selling passenger car in Mzansi, the Polo Vivo, as well as Jetta, Amarok, Golf and others. It’s envisaged that over time, the service department will open even on weekends and public holidays in order to help accommodatecustomers who get no time out during the week.

WE DRIVE ALL-NEW OPEL MERIVA AND ASTRA GTC

Don't Copy From This Blog...

Protected by Copyscape Plagiarism Detection

We don’t get to hear from Opel as often as we’d like, so when we got the news that they’d be launching both a new Meriva and the latest teasing from the awesome Astra stable, we were there with our driving gloves on.

The new MPV Meriva enters the market somewhere between the B and C classes. No idea what the need for nog a class of cars is, but there you have it. Place it somewhere in your minds between the new A-Class Merc and the nicely spacious Chevy Orlandothen.

Opel are pushing a new design language through in the Meriva, trying to sport up the MPV segment a bit by stealing some cues from the little cousin Astra GTC. Look specifically for the blade motif in the body sides, “sculptural artistry meets German precision” as they call it.

The big talking point of the Meriva is the inclusion of the “suicide doors” which Opel insist we don’t name such, but rather “Flex doors”. Whatever you call it, the front and back doors open opposite each other and either side of the B-pillar to allow for more access to the children in the back by the mom in the front. Makes some sense, especially when you factor in that both doors can open independently (unlike in the FJ Cruiser for example) and to 90 degrees.

No worries either about the kiddiesopening them during the drive, all doors are electronically locked at speeds over 4km/h. They unlock when stationary or in the event of a crash.

FlexSpace is another philosophy employed in the Meriva, allowing the backseats to be quickly and easily transformed to a five, four, three, or two seat configuration. Space in the back is very generous and the “Flex doors” give the car the impression that it is longer than it actually is.

A FlexRail slidable centre console found in the front of the car between the two seats increases space and storage for the front occupants. Beware that you’re actually putting your cell phone into the actual console and not letting it sit between the actual rails while the console is pushed back. We misplaced our Blackberry for most of the drive thanks to this.

With so many options for consumers in the MPV segment, one wonders what the difference between most of them is. The Meriva is facing this issue with a pretty decent 1.4 turbochargedpetrol engine that doesn’t detractfrom the comfort and space the car offers. Throw into the equation the viral talkability that the suicide doors is going to create amongst impressionablesoccer moms who are more concerned with one-upping the Jones’ than with being on time to fetch the kids, and we think Opel is on to a winner with the Meriva.

The great news from Opel got better later in the day, the new Astra GTC with whisperings of the new OPC coming out in a few months’ time.

But for now we would have to contentourselves with the two models available in the GTC. Poor us.

It seems that the folk at Opel are obsessedwith blurting out, off the bat, who their cars are going to compete with. Not a problem if you’re realistic, but when the first thing out of the presenter’s mouth at the media briefing is “Scirocco”, every journo within a 100km radius(even the fashion editors) started salivating. Could this GTC really match the excitementand performance of the VW hatch? Hopefully not the ride though.

The smaller and less powerful Astra 1.4Tat 103kW and 200Nm isn’t what we would call exciting, but you do have the 1.6T Sport to opt for if you need something quicker. Neither of these derivatives is a Scirocco beater, and that became very clear, very fast.

But there’s nothing wrong with that, perhaps he just got his notes wrong. Both of these cars are still very comfortabledrives and have a bit of speed in them. Standard is a 15 millimetre lowered sports chassis, exclusive HiPerStrut front suspension, and advanced rear suspension with Watt’s link. It’s sporty down below.

The standard electronic driver aid package includes ABS brakes, ESP and traction control and electronic braking. This is all supposed to assist a driver in recovering from marginal grip or lost grip situations. Problem was, we didn’t really feel much of this at the disappointingacceleration offered in both models.

We’re not griping, we’re just being realisticabout these cars. There’s no way Opel could blow us away with the GTC, while knowing that in a few months we’ll be expectingmuch more from the OPC. Now when that happens, Scirocco can sit up and take notes.

So this car isn’t a hot hatch or quickbetween the lights, but for your money you get into the most popular product in the Opel range, which looks phenomenal and is far from sluggish. It’s just not anything that the Scirocco is..yet!

RAND SHOW TO FEATURE HOT RODS, DRAGSTERS

A massive display of muscle cars, hot rods, racing cars, classics, and dragsters will be one of the Highlights of this year’s Rand Easter Show, held at the Nasrec Expo Centre from April 6 to 15.

Entitled the “Festival of Motoring”, this year’s display will be three times the size of a similar display last year which proved to be one of the most popular exhibits at the 2011 show.

In addition to the spectacularly varied exhibit of cars from eras dating from the early 1900s to the latest muscle cars from the US, the Festival of Motoring will feature a motoring stage show on both weekends of the show, hosted by well known motoring media personalities Stuart Johnston and Hendrik Verwoerd.

“The response to this year’s event has been amazing,” said Johnston. “We’ve had clubs and owners of classics and racing cars contacting us constantly to ensure they reserve their spot in Hall 5, due to the response of last year”.

Highlights of  Hall 5 will be the appearance of the famous Tarlton Jet Car, which will be wheeled out of the hall on the weekend days to do the famous “Burner Pops”. This involves starting up the incredibly powerful Westinghouse jet engine and injecting raw fuel into the flame emitted from the back of the Jet Car. This car is capable of accelerating to 400 km/h in less than six seconds.

“The sound of that Jet Car will curl your toes” says Johnston. “And when the Tarlton men do their burner pops, you will probably want to run for cover!”

Another highlight will be a special exhibition by the Benoni Heritage Vehicle and Engine Club. This enthusiastic band from the East Rand will be bringing upwards of 15 vehicles, including three Rolls Royce models from the 1920s and two Model T Fords, one of which is only partly restored. They will also be bringing a vintage tractor, a truck from the 1920s and some vintage stationary agricultural engines.

A host of Ford Mustangs, Chevrolet Camaros, Corvettes and custom pick-ups will add a strong “Fast and Furious” flavour to the hall. Both the MG Club and the Triumph Club will be present, as well as the strong Volvo Club.

Classic Beetles will again be presented, from the Jo’burg VW and Beetle Club, as well as the fa-mous Eddy Rust collection, which numbers some very early pre-1954 Split Window examples.

There will also be a giant, professional level Scalextric track on hand for visitors to try their hand – or their thumbs – at this fantastic form of fantasy racing.

DAKAR 2012: TWO TOYOTA HILUX NOW IN TOP 10

Following official confirmation of the exclusion for a technical rules infringement of the Hummer driven by the American Robbie Gordon, which finished fifth, the final results of the 2012 Dakar Rally in South America in January place all three South African built and developed Toyota Hilux bakkies that completed the 8 000-kilometre event in the top 10.

While the remarkable third place overall of 2009 Dakar champions Giniel de Villiers of South Africa and German co-driver Dirk von Zitzewitz in an Imperial Toyota Hilux was never in doubt, the sister Hilux of Argentine privateers Lucio Alvarez and Ronnie Graue moves up from sixth to fifth and the second Imperial Toyota Hilux of South Africans Duncan Vos and Rob Howie is elevated from 11th to 10th place overall.

Gordon’s exclusion was ratified by the international governing body of motorsport, the FIA, last week after he was excluded during the Dakar, but completed the event racing under appeal.

Toyota Motorsport team principal Glyn Hall comments:  “We were already very happy and proud to have all three of our uniquely South African Toyota Hilux bakkies finish the toughest and longest off road race in the world at the team’s first attempt.  That they are now officially classified as having completed the gruelling 15-day 8 000-kilometre race in the top 10 is great news.

“It’s also a fitting reward to a special team of South Africans that put in an almost superhuman effort over several months to prepare the vehicles for the event and then looked after them so well throughout the two weeks of competition.”

For Gugu Zulu and Carl Peskin the first rally of 2012 saw a welcome return to form. The pair compete in the S2000 Challenge category and here they make use of a BP Volkswagen Polo Vivo S2000.

“We had a few problems in the last two stages,” says Zulu. “We overcame those to finish the event, making it the first time I've crossed the finish line in 10 events. I'm very excited for the new season, the car feels good and we had a great rally.”

Zulu and Peskin rallied to second place in this new S2000 category, marking a strong start to their 2012 season. The BP Volkswagen Polo Vivo S1600 of Megan Verlaque and Hilton Auffray also made good headway in the start of their 2012 season campaign.

Verlaque and Auffray crossed the finish at stage 16 to claim fourth place in the S1600 category. This is a good base for the duo to continue their campaign throughout the season to aim for a class victory.

“I got a bit over-excited in the first stage and got stuck,” says Verlaque. “That cost me a lot of time, but Saturday I drove with the focus on finishing the rally and we set some decent times on the stages in the second day. It has been a good start to the season.”

The BP Volkswagen rally team will next tackle round two of the national championship, the Sasol Rally in the Nelspruit area, from 20-21 April. Here the focus will be on continuing to build on the groundwork of the first event as the team works on making the new BP Volkswagen Polo S2000 achieve rally-winning results.

POSSIBLE MALFUNCTION: BMW SA RECALLING OLD 5 AND 6 SERIES CARS

Don't Copy From This Blog...

In order to carry out a quality measure, the BMW Group is re-calling all previous generation BMW 5 and 6 Series models, built between 2003 and 2010 and still on the market, for repair at authorised dealers.

In certain cases, the battery cable cover inside the boot of these vehicles may be incorrectly mounted. This could result in an electrical system malfunction, the vehicle failing to start and, in very rare circumstances, the charring of the cables or fire. Significantly, the BMW Group is not aware of any accidents or injury to persons as a result of this fault, which was brought to light by the Group’s stringent internal quality control measures.

The number of vehicles affected in South Africa totals 11 780 cars. The models in question include all 5 and 6 Series models (E6x) built from March 2003 to September 2010, which means all previous generation BMW 5 Series Sedans, BMW M5 Sedans and BMW M5 Touring models.  All previous generation BMW 6 Series Coupes, Convertibles and BMW M6 Coupes and BMW M6 Convertibles are included in the recall as well.

Vehicle owners will be notified in writing, requesting them to bring the vehicle to their respective dealership where the repair will be done at no cost to the customer. This repair should not take longer than 30 minutes.

MITSUBISHI PAJERO MANUAL SHOWS STRENGTHS

Don't Copy From This Blog...

Since July 2011, MitsubishiSouth Africa has been officially divorcedfrom Daimler South Africa. It’s now part of the Imperial Group and is determined to punch well above its weight. Unfortunately several pit stops have to be made before then, including sourcing new and attractiveproduct. Possibly the best-known nameplate in the Mitsubishi stable is Pajero, and the Pajero Sport is its latest sub-brand.

Launched in 2009 as an automatic-only model, Thailand-built Pajero Sport is now available with a manual gearbox. Tough yet comfy, it competes directly with the ruling Toyota Fortuner as an everyday 7-seater SUVwith serious off-road capability. It’s this capability that we put to the test on a short excursion within the 4x4-friendly Thaba Nkwe farm out in North West.

Tucked beneath the Magalisbergrange, Thaba Nkwe is a private farm of course, whose owner saw serious value in converting some of the land into 4x4topia. Various off-road trails, rivers, mountain climbs and forest stops make up the range of challenges faced by budding Dakar heroes.

Of course Mitsu has previously won the famous gruelling Dakar a record 11 times using the usual Pajero as its base. This Sport version with its new 5-speed manual gearbox makes one look like a Dakar star. With its Super Select 4WD system, the car is able to transform from an everyday SUV into a mud-slinging all-terrainer. While some of the latest SUVs prefer using buttons to engage the different off-road gears, Mitsu has stuck to the old and trusted smaller low-rangesecond gear lever to do the job. And it’s really easy. For normal driving we would put the stubby lever into 2H, which sends all power and torque to the rear wheels for smooth, uninterrupted driving.

But for the rough stuff you have to engage other assistants. The 4H level for instance, puts torque split in the 33:67 realm, meaning all wheels are on alert but the rear ones still take precedence for enhanced on-road dynamics as well as higher-speed driving on gravel for example. Only for a few minutes during three hours on the course did I go over the 80km/hmark in this mode. With 4H in place, you still retain good car control on treacherous surfaces like loose sand.

The third mode, called 4HLc, distributes torque to all four wheels in equal does, meaning a 50:50 split between the front and rear axles. In addition though, this mode locks the centre differential. Often on the Thaba Nkwe course we’d have to engage 4HLc during steep hill climbs on slippery and uneven, stony surfaces. The Pajero Sport never once got stuck or complained too much, despite some of the trails being overrun by flash floods the previous night.

For the real ruggedguy who sees not a canyon but a mere back road, 4LLc is the ultimatetruck puller mode. Instead of going as fast as possible, here you go as fast as necessary and as slow as needed. One trail had to be walked first to ascertain its evilness. It looked like a road only ever travelled by the Voortrekkers. Despite this, the car, following good off-road sense and instruction, managed to go up this badass steep convincinglyand without once flinching an inch. Or rolling backwards for a restart.

One of the main reasons the Pajero Sport does so well off-road is the strong 3.2-litre turbo diesel engine with Direct Injection technology. It delivers 120kW at 3500rpm, and 343Nmof torque at a low 2000rpm. Another is the 36° approach angle, helped by the 25° departure angle. That it stands a tall 215mmoff the ground also comes in very handy in these situations.

One might read all this and wonder what kind of uncivilised truck I was driving. No, this is an SUV. A family SUV with enough space to swallow 7 passengers. And in addition to the usual customer-demanded amenities like power steering and climate control, Mitsubishi also saw it fit to install other niceties like a full leather interior, side steps for easy boarding, park distance control, a multi-information display (tells you how many kilometres are left in your tank for instance) and others.

Having put the Pajero Sport through some real off-road challenges, and watching it go past them with no qualms whatsoever, I can safely say it’s one of the best off-road/ on-road combination SUVs out in the market today. Now Mitsubishi SA and its parent Imperial just have to convince Fortuner fans of that.

EGYPTIAN BMW 120D TURNS INTO M3-POWERED 1M COUPE

In Egypt, as in South Africa, government import taxes can cripple a guy’s dream by placing ridiculous amounts of extra costson a new imported car. Now a guy in Egypt has refused to fund his government’s coffers by creating his own BMW 1M Coupe, instead of crying about how greedy the state is.

The car is pricedat around R1.15 million in Egypt, about twice the price in South Africa and almost 3 times what you would pay in the United States! Actually in Mzansi you could just about get an M5 for Egyptian 1M Coupe money.

So what this enterprising oke did was to take a 120d instead, plus an M3 engine, and put the two together. Now his modified 120d doesn’t make 130kW anymore, but instead pushes out 309kW. The whole tune job cost him less than R345 000, including 1M lookalike fenders, bumpers, side skirts and four tailpipes among other added parts.

DATSUN RETURN CONFIRMED

Nissan is about to expand its brand lineup by one more, by reviving an old favourite name. The Datsun badge is making a return to the public fore. First used in 1931, the Datsun brand later became one of the most respected around the world when cars like the 240 Z (aka Fairlady) bore its name.

At some point in the early 1980s, Nissan began rebranding its Datsuns as Nissans, and eventually completely eradicated it. But yesterday Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Nissan and Infiniti, confirmed his company was bringing Datsun back to life. Terms and conditions apply. One of these is that only the developing world will receive Datsun cars. By developing they mean India, Indonesia and Russia. Nothing on Mzansi though.

Mercedes-Benz South Africa all but confirmed the imminent arrival of the GLK-Class small SUV for the first time in this country later this year. The GLK is a direct rival of the cars like the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60. It was launched for the first time in Germany in 2008 and went on to feature on the hit movie Sex and the City. But Mzansi was not on the list. Until now.

The GLK, now presented as a facelifted model, features revised headlights, different LED daytime running lights and other new goodies. On the engine front the car has both diesel and petrol, including the GLK 200 CDI worth 105kW and 350Nm, as well as the 195kW/ 620Nm GLK 350 CDIV6 BlueEfficiency.

No pricing has been confirmed for the local market yet, but you can look at the direct rivals for guidanceon this.

2013 CHEVROLET TRAILBLAZER POWER FIGURES DETAILED

The Chevrolet Trailblazer, which has been confirmed for introduction to the South African market in a few months’ time, has been detailed more than before. It is said to be debuting at the Bangkok Motor Show next week, in full guise. The SUV will compete with vehicles like the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport production.

Buyers will be able to buy either a two-wheel-drive (2WD) or four-wheel-drive (4WD) model, although SA hasn’t confirmed which will be sold here. GMSA has also not confirmed engines, but in Asia there are two, which is the 2.5-litreand 2.8-litre Duramax turbo diesels. Maximum power from the 2.5-litre is 110kWand torque is 350Nm, while the 2.8-litre makes 132kW and 470Nm (or a lower 440Nm with the manual gearbox) of torque.

“Our objective when developing the Trailblazer was to achieve ride and handling dynamicsthat match, and in many cases exceed, those of similar-size crossover vehicles,” said Brad Merkel, GM’s Global Vehicle Line Executive for Midsize Trucks and SUVs in a press statement. “The Trailblazer will cater to a wide range of driving styles and requirements. It is car-like responsive and premium in its ride quality while offering the off-roadcapability that our customers demand. That makes it the complete SUV package.”

Now that the 2012 Geneva Motor Show is over, it’s time to look forward to the New York Auto Show next month. One car set to be a major attraction is the brand spanking new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG, a new supercar roadster for the boss. The car itself is the boss.

Packing a massive 6.0-litre V12 with two turbos, the car makes 463kWof power between 4800rpm and 5400rpm. Peak torque of 1 000Nm is achieved between 2300rpm and 4300rpm, all sent to the 255/35 R 19 rear wheels. The thing is driven by an AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic gearbox, and is said to be able to make its way from 0 – 100km/h in just 4 seconds flat. That compares well to the SLS AMG which IN4RIDE tested at 4 seconds at Gauteng altitude.

To its performance credit, the SL 65 AMG has lost about 170kgcompared to the previous version. That’s massive and is a major reason for the improvement in performance as well as claimed fuel consumption. The latter is now 11.6 litres per 100km.

Some of the features included in the car are the Airscarf system that blows warm air into the back of your neck as you drive with the top open, safer driving through Attention Assist and a Bang & Olufsen sound system attached to a 6-DVD changer entertainment piece.

The car will be available at German dealerships in September at a price of €236 334 (R2.4 million). The current SL 65 AMG costs R2.5 million in Mzansi today.
