JAGUAR SHOWS OFF XF SPORTBRAKE BEFORE GENEVA

The new Jaguar XF Sportbrake is really a station wagon version of the beautiful Jaguar XF sedan. It is being prepared for full public consumption at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show. Wagons are generally more popular in Europe than they are in other continents, so a Mzansi introduction is, while entirely possible, highly unlikely.

Jaguar is keen to emphasisethat the XF Sportbrake can closely match its sedan sibling when it comes to handling, despite an almost 70kg weight penalty. And on the plus side, it offers much more usable space, with a 1675 litre boot (with rear seats folded flat) and an extra 48 mm of rear headroom.

The car expectedly shares some of its engines with the sedan, including the 2.2-litre and the 3.0-litre turbo diesels. For the moment though, no one is talking about an XF R Sportbrake with 375kWof supercharged 5.0-litre V8. But considering that main competitors like the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG and Audi RS 6 also offer wagon variants, Jaguar might just invite itself to that party.

VW SA LAUNCHES GOLF CABRIOLET

Volkswagen South Africa chose the very scenic Western Cape to launch the brand new Golf Cabriolet. Just as well because this was one of the few places around the country where some sun was shining and the breezelight. This is just the kind of car for such occasions.

Based on the current Golf 6 module, the Golf Cabriolet completely replaces the Eos, like we said before. While there was nothing seriously wrong with the Eos – pretty, comfortable, lovely to drive – the price was just too steep. At about R356 000 for the entry-level model, Eos was just not going to attract enough buyers to justify its existence.

Enter Golf Cabriolet, the first drop-top from this model series since the Mk4. Unlike the Eos, the new car features a soft-top roof mechanism. It opens in 9 seconds, making it probably the fastest in the segment. Just by pushing/ pulling on a button, the roof will open or close electronically, at the same time opening or closing the side windows with it. A common feature among topless cars is how noisy they get at certain higher speeds. The Golf isn’t bad though, but does exhibit some aural intrusion levels past the 120km/hmark.

VW says it’s 4.2 metres long, 1.8m wide, and 1.4m high. Quite compact, but still longer than the 5-door hatch. I didn’t get a chance to try out the rear seats but from where I was sitting, two 1.8m okes would not fit comfortably when sitting sequentially. But it’s all good for the driver. Multi-adjustableleather seats fit snuggly around the back and waist, while the dashboard is made from soft-touch quality material. There are seat warmers, electrically-adjustable windows and a steering wheel with satellite controls. The sound system features touch-screen technology but does not have satellite navigation.

When driving around the Cape area, particularly in the Franschoek scene, there were one or two eyes gawking at the car. But that’s mostly when the roof was down. Otherwise it seemed to fly past people’s minds that this is a brand new car. I’m not sure why they would think otherwise, considering the statement about it being the first since Mk4. Never mind them, this is a really good-looking little machine with a very sexy rear end complimented by those LED taillights. The front profile is Golf 6 of course, featuring LED daytime running lights, optional bi-xenons, and a wind blocker among others. I couldn’t help but be reminded of the cousin Audi A3 Cabriolet, which features similar technologies and even some parts. Like the paddles behind the steering wheel in the DSG models. And the engines.

At launch there were two DSG-only models, all powered by the 1.4-litre TSI turbo engine. You either got to drive the 90kW with 200Nm of torque, or the 118kW (with both turbo and supercharger) version putting 240Nm on the axles. Said performance is 10.5 seconds on the 0 – 100km/h front for the lesser model, while the 118kW takes a claimed 8.4 seconds. A combined fuel average of 6.3 litres per 100km is envisaged on both, painted to 147 g/km in C02emissions.

The entry car felt quite lazy on the uptake, despite all that sea level air and the spinning turbine. Revs had to be quite high for any bit of performance to take place, resulting in a rather pedestrian cruise rather than a spirited drive. To be fair, that’s to be expected of the baby cabby. The 118kW however returned something a little more than a smile, while at the same time not exactly lighting up the sky. I heard no scuttle shake at any point but admittedly the majority of the roads travelled are kept quite well. The standard 205 / 55 R16 rubber held up, so did the higher-spec 225/ 45 R17s on the 118kW.

The Golf Cabriolet is a nichecar, meaning not everyone is meant to drive one. Cabriolets always sound like a ncaplan, until it’s 38 degrees C under the African sky, and your dome is begging for cover. Because of this these kinda cars offer very limited full-time usage in the Mzansi context; they should only be opened under overcastdays, mornings or late afternoons/ early evenings. All this limits them even further than the fact that they are quite impractical to too. So it’s no surprise they are so rare and expensive. Golf Cab is not expensive though, relatively speaking. Hopefully it takes off better than Eos did.

Golf Cabriolet Pricing
90kW manual (R283 400)
90kW DSG (R297 900)
118kW manual (R324 000)
118kW DSG (R338 500)

MOST POWERFUL FERRARI F12BERLINETTA BREAKS COVER

Today Ferrari unveiled its most powerful car ever, the F12berlinetta. Weird name yes, but still a magnificent-looking thing with an incredible technical ability, from what we can see. It will be unveiled publically next week at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show, so if you happen to be around there, go have a look.

First things first. This is a Ferrari, and so fans will want to know about the engine above all else. Well, it’s a 6.3-litre V12 with natural aspiration (no turbos here), nestling in the mid-front position to realise a total 54/46 weight distribution. It is the most powerful road-going Ferrari ever to come out of Maranello, thanks to the 544kW it produces at 8500rpm, and the 690Nm of torque at a banging 6000rpm. The 0 – 100km/h sprint time takes just 3.1 seconds, and top speed is said to be over 340km/h. Average fuel consumption, likely to be more of an irritant than a disappointment to potential buyers, is 15 litres per 100km, which in real life means over 20 litres per 100km!

F12berlinetta is 4.6 metres long, 1.9m wide, 1.3m high and has a dry weight of 1 525kg, which is 70kg lighter than the 599 GTB it replaces. This is thanks to an all-new spaceframe chassis and body shell using 12 different kinds of alloys, some of which apparently, have never been used in cars before.

The Pininfarinaoriginal is a full two-door coupe with additional luggage capacity behind the seats, while the dashboard is designed around the driver’s needs, which is quite typical of Ferrari.

At the 2012 GenevaInternational Motor Show which starts next week on the 6th , Citroënwill debut the DS3 Racing S. Loeb, a car that’s based on the DS3 line, specifically the DS3 Racing, but with some added spice. Thanks to its on-going association with multiple WRC champion, the car should already be sold out in its tiny niche of 200 units.

What’s different? Well, for one it is signed by Loeb himself. For another, it has the “Citroën MyWay navigation system and features a distinctive use of colours and materials. The body is cloaked in a unique matt black colour with a textured effect” says the press release.

The cars are also painted in a unique and special finish, while there’s a shade of red on the roof, side mirrors, front grille and dashboard.

There were no engine details supplied but we reckon it’s safe to assume the same 1.6-litre turbo producing 147kW and 275Nm of torque to the front wheels.

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has welcomed the Western Cape High Court's sentence imposed earlier today (Tuesday, 28 February 2012) on mini-bus taxi driver Jacob Humphreys for killing 10 children, as well as the attempted murder of four others.

Judge Robert Henney handed down an effective 20-year jail term and also cancelled Humphrey's driver's licence with immediate effect.

“We welcome this sentence, and hope that it will serve as a deterrent to other motorists. We want 2012 to be the year of action for safer roads,” said Minister Ndebele. “Those who are turning our roads into killing fields must be isolated and exposed for their deeds are not only a danger to themselves, but pose a real threat to the sustainability of society. Together with the Ministries of Justice and Police, as well as the National Prosecuting Authority, we will continue to go all out to ensure that dangerous drivers are removed from the roads. As government, we want to make it very clear that we remain steadfast in our resolve to bring down the fatality rate on our roads.

The reduction in road deaths is not just desirable; it is an urgent non-negotiable, and has become our daily mission, which has called upon world leaders to work together during this Decade of Action for road safety and to share solutions to this challenge. Through the National Rolling Enforcement Plan (NREP), we will continue stopping and checking no less than a million vehicles and drivers every month, as well as aggressively pursue dangerous drivers who drink and drive, drive recklessly or drive inconsiderately,” said Ndebele.

Last month (January 2012), 8 507 motorists were arrested across the country including 1 762 for drinking and driving, 84 for reckless and/or negligent driving, 215 for excessive speed, 206 for goods overloading, 4 572 for outstanding warrants of arrest, 220 for not being in possession of valid public transport permits, 54 for false documentation, 97 for not being in possession of a valid driving licence and 1 297 for various other offences. During the same period, 1 223 100 vehicles and drivers were checked, and 484 476 fines issued for various offences including 33 724 for failing to wear front seatbelts and 1 274 for failing to wear rear seatbelts. Four thousand seven hundred and ten (4 710) vehicles were discontinued from use, and 26 vehicles impounded.

POLO VIVO-BUSTING TOYOTA ETIOS CONFIRMED FOR MAY

Toyota South Africa is gearingup for a very busy year. Kicking things off will be the new Etios range, cars that are meant to fill the gap left by the departure of the Tazz over 5 years ago. While Toyota has twice tried to cover this void – first with Yaris Zen and lately with Aygo– it appears customers aren’t buying into these models as they did with lovely Tazz.

Built in India, Etios then becomes the new Tazz. It will be offered with two body styles, a sedan and a hatch. We expect the hatch to be the more popular. In some countries it is offered with either a 1.4-litre or a 1.5-litre petrol. Mzansi is getting the 1.5-litre with 66kW and 132Nm of torque. It is mated to a 5-speed manualgearbox.

Etios launches in Mzansi during May sometime. Toyota plans on and is working extremely hard in ensuring that the days of Volkswagen Polo Vivo ruling the passenger car sales are long gone. Perhaps it will be third time lucky for them.

LAND ROVER OFFERS OWNERS FREE 4X4 COURSE

Mastering the art of driving a 4x4 SUV can be challenging if you haven’t received the correct training. The on-road handling characteristics of a 4x4 SUV differ from those of a normal passenger car, while off-road excursions offer many daunting obstacles that can be easily overcome with the right driving techniques.

Land Rover South Africa has therefore decided to offer local 4x4 SUV drivers a complimentary opportunity to improve their on- and off-road driving skills though its Land Rover Experience training centres. The offer is open to anyone driving a 2005 or later year-model 4x4 SUV.

“It’s a unique initiative that nobody else has ever done before” explains Roland Reid, Marketing Director Jaguar Land Rover South Africa. “The Land Rover Experience prides itself in being the only local facility to utilise internationally accredited instructors and we are delighted to be able to make their extensive expertise available to all 4X4 SUV drivers free of charge.”

The half-day driving courses are designed to educate drivers on the specific characteristics of 4x4 SUVs and the techniques required in order to ensure a safe driving experience. It also ensures that drivers are able to use their vehicles to their maximum potential when the situation demands.

“While this initiative gives us the opportunity to enhance the skills of many South African road users and improve road safety, it is also a unique opportunity for motorists to experience the Land Rover line-up in a fun and educational environment,” adds Reid.

BABY VOLVO V40 LEAKED!

Poor Volvo. Waiting for Geneva 2012 to unveil their latest baby beauty to the public, until some evil entity (probably a disgruntledemployee) leaked the car on the internet. This then ladies and gents, is the all-new Volvo V40, a car with great future ambitions.

These ambitions include unseating, or at least competing on a levelplaying field with current market leaders, namely the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. The is also the Lexus CT 200H to contend with, as well as the upcoming Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Big, well-respected names. But Volvo is up to the task with its entry-level notchback.

Save from being priced keenly against these rivals, we also expect it to be powered by some serious turboengines. They include a 1.6-litrewith 132kW and a 2.0-litre making 177kW, as well as some turbo diesel D3 and D5 models, the former pulling a stunning 400Nm of torque.

An official announcement may be made prior to the Geneva Show, failing which you will hear more about this car when it’s publically unveiled there. It should land in Mzansi before the end of 2012.

Suzuki and IE have been developing fuel cell vehicles such as the co-developed motorcycles equipped with air-cooled fuel cell system exhibited at the 2007, 2009 and 2011 Tokyo Motor Shows, and earning Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) in March 2011 for the Burgman Fuel Cell Scooter, the world’s first fuel cell vehicle to earn it.

In order to officially develop and manufacture one of the next-generation environmental vehicles – a motorcycle and an automobile equipped with fuel cell systems – Suzuki has established a joint venture company, SMILE FC, from this month for developing and manufacturing fuel cell system with IEH.

It will seek to speed up the commercialisation of products by combining the fuel cell development technology of IE, and control and mass-production technologies of Suzuki.

The investment rates for SMILE FC is 50% for both companies. The headquarters will be located within the Suzuki headquarters in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and its research facility will be located at Suzuki’s Yokohama Laboratory.

Beginning with the air-cooled fuel cell system, which is characterised by its low mass, compact form factor and potential for cost reduction, Suzuki and IE, with SMILE FC at the core, will work on developing mass-production technology and the manufacturing of fuel cells, as well as exploiting the global supply chain of fuel cell parts, and promoting the fuel cell vehicles.

GENERAL MOTORS CELEBRATES OSCARS WITH MOVIE CARS

Lights, camera, start your engines! For one night each year, Hollywood gathers to honour the best in the movie industry. Yet, an often unsung star in these films seldom receives the credit it deserves – the automobile.

Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac have produced some of the toughest, fastest, most stylish and most cutting-edge American-made vehicles to have appeared in countless films. From classics like American Graffiti (1973) and Rain Man (1988) to modern action movies like the Transformers franchise (2007, 2009, and 2011) and The Matrix Reloaded (2003), General Motors vehicles have been scene stealers in some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters.

“The high-profile association with a blockbuster and classic movies gives Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac wonderful exposure to those not familiar with the brand,” said Steve Tihanyi, general director Branded Entertainment & Marketing Alliances. “We are always looking for unique ways to humanize and expose our vehicles to new consumers and there will always be a certain ‘cool’ factor in starring on the big screen.”

Most recently, the Chevrolet Camaro sports car took a starring role as Bumblebee in the Transformers (2007), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) and Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011). Two Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Special Edition vehicles were offered by Chevrolet that sold about 3 000 units, transferring the big screen appeal to the roadway.

The Camaro wasn’t alone among Chevrolets to appear in the Transformers franchise. The Corvette Stingray Concept and a 1965 Chevrolet Malibu also had cameo roles. All three are now part of GM’s Heritage Collection.

“Cars have a lot in common with movies, and there is an often an emotional connection between the audience and the featured car,” said Elliot Wilhelm, film curator for the Detroit Institute of Arts and founder of the Detroit Film Theatre. “You often hear audible groans or see cringes form the audience when a beautiful car is destroyed in a movie.”

Vin Diesel did just that with a Corvette in the 2002 action thriller “xXx” – narrating as 18 cameras filmed the dive from the 223m Forresthill Bridge in Auburn, Calif. A stunt double parachutes to safety before Vin’s character, Xander Cage, escapes with buddies waiting at the river bed below. Diesel later used a weapons-modified 1967 Pontiac GTO as his ride.

Who could forget director Tim Burton’s Batmobile from Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992)? It was a “bat”-customized Chevy Impala? Or the 1959 Cadillac that was the chase of Pink Cadillac (1989)?

More than 30 years after the start of the relationship between the four-time F1 champion and Renault, the two partners have decided to give a new dimension to their collaborative effort. By accepting to become a brand ambassador, Alain Prost will place all his technical expertise, professionalism and renown at the service of Renault and its products. Throughout the year he will take part as a Renault driver in sports demonstrations and also as a representative at events organized or attended by Renault.

“Renault’s history is intimately linked to that of motorsport and I have a deep attachment to the brand, with which I achieved some of the greatest successes in my sporting career, Alain Prost said. I accepted this mission with pleasure and I intend to accomplish it with professionalism.”

“We are delighted that Alain Prost has accepted the role as our brand ambassador. Carlos Tavares, Renault Chief Operating Officer said. As a four-time Formula 1 champion renowned the world over for his technical expertise, Alain is without a doubt one of the most demanding ‘customers’ that Renault has ever had! GENEVA 2012: LAND ROVER EVOQUE CONVERTIBLE CONCEPT

The 2012 Geneva International Motor Show is shaping up to be a bit of a Pandora’s box as far as what to expect from automakers. Just check out this concept car from Land Rover, an entire Range Rover Evoque Convertible!

“The Evoque Convertible Concept is a new twist to the Evoque story and explores the potential to further extend the nameplate's appeal by giving existing customers more choice, whilst at the same time reaching out to a completely newcustomer base,” said John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director in a statement.

While some may wonder WTFLand Rover is thinking, we see absolutely nothing wrong with this pretty little rendition. Remember that old school 4x4s like the Jeep Wrangler and Landy’s own Defender had / have removable roof options. This is just a modern expression of that kind of freedom. A convertible SUV is really quite a cool thing to have as far as we are concerned.

Of course should it go into production, engines will be shared with existing Evoques, including the 2.0-litre turbo with 177kW.

Trust the Russianshey. These okes have leaked pictures of the all-new Audi A3 hatchback just weeks before it makes its world debut at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show. The car will do battle with the BMW 1 Series and the upcoming 2013Mercedes-Benz A-Class in the premium sub-compact hatch segment.

The car looks very much like the current one, but is obviously quite updated on all fronts. This is just to have some kind of continuityand not confuse consumers with a radicallydifferent shape that has no links with its predecessor. Later it will spawn 5-door Sportback, Cabriolet and sedan versions.

A3 is expected to carry some of the same engines as found in the A1 and A4 range, which include a 1.6 TDI, 1.2 TFSI, an S3 and RS 3 range at a later stage.
