JAGUAR XF SPORTBRAKE "SPY" PICS "LEAKED"

In a move precedentedonly by BMW, Jaguar has leaked these “spy” pictures from its own sources. The car is a wagon version of the XF, which is called the Sportbrake. Mmhh, why is this very similar to Audi’s Sportback models? Anyway, South Africa is unlikely to import these wagons as our people are simply not interested in buying station wagons, whatever premium manufacturersopt to label them.

But for your interest, it is likely to be offered in at least four of the 6 available engines, including the 2.2-litre diesel with 140kW and 450Nm, a 3.-0-litre diesel worth 202kW and 600Nm, and an XFR pushing a shattering 375kW. The XF Sportbrake is expected in Europe in 2012 and will be the model’s first additional body derivative.

2014 VOLVO XC 90 SKETCHES SHOWN

Volvo launched the XC 90 SUV way back in 2003. It actually represented a new design language for the normally-conservative Swedish brand (now owned by Chinese company Geely). But 8 years later it looks so long in the tooth that even sabre-toothed tigers would be envious. Unfortunately there’s still at least 2 more years to stroll through.

With these four artist impressionsketches released by Volvo, the company is teasingfans and those who prefer other brands. A new design broom has been sweeping through corridors and cars like the S60 are evidence. While the sketchespoint to a new sportier XC 90, they don’t revealexactly how it will look. Often such drawingsare far removed from what the final product looks like so don’t expect these to be anything more than design directions.

SUBARU SHOWS OFF BORING BRZ

Following sister brand Toyota’s unveiling of its 86 (or GT 86 in Europe), Subaru has now shown us full pictures of the mechanically identical BRZ. While we weren’t exactly bowled over by the 86’s styling, we reckon the Scoobyhas done an even worse job, preferring to stay clean and staid. The car looks like it comes straight out of the 1980s.

Like we stated earlier, mechanically the two are the same. That means a 2.0-litre boxer engine with natural aspiration, making off with 147kWand 205Nm of torque. Perhaps an STI version will bring in the turbo and shake off cars like the Scirocco R. New for Subaru is the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) setup, this from a company that trumpeted all-wheel-drive (AWD) as the future of motoring. Again, a choice of 6-speed manual and automatic will be made available to buyers.

Subaru should be launching the BRZ in Mzansi sometime in 2012.

BMW TO MARRY TOYOTA?

Don't Copy From This Blog...

Protected by Copyscape Plagiarism Detection

An internet report claims that BMW and Toyota are courting each other with the aim of sharing technologies. BMW, the world leader in premium car sales, and Toyota, until recently the world’s biggest seller of all cars, are said to be walking down the aisle.

A report by AutoNewsEurope says powertrains are the talk of the lobolo negotiations. Specifically BMW wants Toyota’s hybrid technology in order to solidify its current number one position in the US, while Toyota is very much interested in BMW’s turbo diesel secrets. The latter is a global leader through cars like the Prius. It has sold over 3 million hybrids so far. At the same time, BMW’s diesel engines are considered to be among the best in the world and would help Toyota sell more cars in diesel-madEurope.

Neither company was interested in commenting on “media speculation”. However, the old saying “there’s no smoke without a fire” has turned out true quite often in matters of this nature. Just look at the recent Maybach story as one reference.

COULD HONDA BE DEVELOPING THE NSX AGAIN?

A couple of years agoHonda was rumoured to be close to finishing off development of a new NS-X supercar. That project was apparently killed off due to the 2008/ 2009 recession. But now a new rumour has suggested the Japanese automakeris preparing for a second stab at it. And the 2012 North American Auto Show in Detroit will be where it debuts. At least in concept form.

Appropriate too since it made its public debut in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show. Since then New Sportscar eXperimental (NS-X) has become one of motoring’s iconicmachines. Even legendary driver Ayrton Senna became involved in its development because Honda supplied engines to his McLaren team. When production of that car ended in 2005, it was fitted with a 3.2-litre naturally aspirated V6 motor doing 216kW and 304Nm of torque.

Honda has been known for high-revving motors used in cars like the Civic Type-R and has stuck to those in the face of the latest turbowave. Hybrids are also becoming quite important to Honda. Therefore we cannot say at this early stage exactly which way they would go, should this rumour turn into fact. Their two Japanese rivals have gone with twin turbos (NissanGT-R) and screaming natural aspiration (Lexus LFA). So either is possible.

1983 PEUGEOT 504 CLOCKS 1 MILLION KM!

Peugeot’s reputation for reliability is legendary across much of the African continent, where vintage 404 and 504 models are still regularly seen on roads that are often little more than dusty tracks.

One Peugeot owner who will attest to the brand’s never-say-die reputation is Robert Hotz, who is the proud owner of a Peugeot 504 in perfect running condition. But what makes this 1983 1.8-litre model so special that it is about to clock a million kilometres – yes, that’s 1 000 000 km!

The car was a demonstration model, and was bought for the princely some of R5 500. It’s been regularly serviced by trained Peugeot technicians ever since – even during the period that the French marque wasn’t represented in South Africa.

“At one stage, parts became a problem, but I found someone in Pretoria who had a workshop full of Peugeot spares – he even found me an indicator lever when the one in my car broke. The same chap also serviced the car during that time – every 10 000 km or so,” Hotz says.

“I’ve loved every minute on the road in my 504. It has given me fantastic value over the years. It’s extremely good on the open road, and I still use it as a business tool every day,”

He owns and manages his own business, and these days has a chauffeur to drive him around in the Peugeot. Richard Moyo is as fastidious about the venerable 504 as its owner, and checks everything from the tyre pressures to the water and oil levels every morning before departing.

“I’ve had lots of offers to buy the 504, but I would never sell it. There’s nothing like these old Peugeots – they just keep going on forever,” Hotz says. His first Peugeot purchase was a 1970 404, which was replaced by his first 504 in 1974.

He drove the 504 to the Peugeot South Africa head office in Linbro Park (Johannesburg) recently to show it to Peugeot SA managing director, Francis Harnie, only days before the odometer was due to clock back to zero, thus achieving the magic million.

“It’s quite astonishing to see a car that’s almost 30 years old, and has covered a million kilometres, and that is still in such good running condition,” commented Harnie. “But then, it is a Peugeot, after all! Cars like this 504 remind us just how strong the Peugeot heritage in Africa, and in this country, really is.”

Team Ford Racing are the 2011 Class T Bridgestone Production Car Champions. The team claimed the championship honours after taking three race wins at the final round of the WesBank Super Series held at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday 26 November.

The team didn’t have things all their own way, with Volkswagen and Opel putting them through the paces throughout Friday’s practice sessions. This trend continued into Saturday with Gary Formato only managing to qualify his BP / Castrol Ford Focus ST in fifth place. Iain Pepper, behind the wheel of the team’s third car, claimed seventh on the grid with Shaun Duminy being forced to the back of the grid following a driving infringement at the previous event.

Despite the odds being stacked against them, the team showed grit and determination charging through the field. Formato crossed the finish line second, with Duminy claiming third and Pepper fourth.

The heat proved to get the better of many competitors in the second race, but Formato had no such problems taking his first race win of the day. Duminy was awarded third place, with Pepper retiring with technical gremlins.

Formato secured the championship title by winning race three and taking his victory tally to 17 for the year in the process. Duminy took another podium finish, crossing the line in second place, while Pepper flew the Ford flag high in fourth.

Duminy ended the season on a high note winning the final race of the day. Formato took second, with Pepper fourth.

“I am ecstatic with the result, a huge thank you to the team, sponsors, fans and Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa for their support throughout the season. I couldn’t have done it without their support,” enthused 2011 Class T Champion, Gary Formato.

“It was a tough year and we had to overcome many obstacles, but in the end, we had the winning package,” concluded Duminy who ended the season in fourth place in the championship.

TOYOTA GT 86 BREAKS OUT!

Don't Copy From This Blog...

Protected by Copyscape Plagiarism Detection

Toyota is beginning to claw its way back from the design and performance abyss. First the Lexus IS-F and LFA supercar showed their mettle, and now officially the GT 86. Previously known as the concept FT-86 in its many different guises, the new sports coupe that sits four people is Toyota’s first performance coupe since the days of Celica and Supra.

Not exactly a Nissan 370 Z beater in terms of power and performance, the GT 86 nevertheless provides a good starting platform for more potent stuff. It’s powered by a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated boxer motor delivering 147kW at 7000rpm and maximum torque of 205Nm at 6600rpm. Clearly this will be a screamer of note, and sadly it will not perform quite to rivals’ turbo standards when it lands in Gauteng where it will probably only produce around 125kW. Shift is through a 6-speed manual for the standard car, while an optional 6-speed automatic can be specified in certain markets. A limited slip differential (LSD) assists in laying power and torque down over the rear wheels.

Nevertheless things do look quite good, from both inside and outside. From a measurements point of view, the GT 86 is 4.2 metres long, 2.57m wide and 1.3m high. A 53:47 weight distribution was achieved. A 50 litre fuel tank is fitted. Front suspension is a MacPherson strut system, while double wishbones make up the rear ride. Speaking of ride, the car rides on 17-inch wheels and has ventilated brakes all around.

High-end features used include aluminium pedals, red stitching on the leather apparel, satellite navigation, heated front seats, climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and others.

The Toyota GT 86 will definitely be in Mzansi in 2012, but pricing hasn’t been confirmed. But considering that its main competitor, the Volkswagen Scirocco 2.0 TSI costs R340 200 standard, this should be the ballpark around which Toyota should play. Unfortunately in the UK the car will be priced around R360 000, meaning in Mzansi it will be more.

SUZUKI TO SHOWCASE SMALL CARS IN TOKYO

Suzuki will showcase its unparalleled expertise in the development, design and production of small cars at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show.

Taking centre stage will be the Regina – Suzuki’s vision of a next-generation global compact car. The Regina focuses on reducing mass and improving aerodynamics to improve performance and efficiency.

At 730kg, the Regina weighs no more than a mini car, despite its much more generous compact car dimensions. Advanced aerodynamics also ensure that it achieves a drag coefficient of at least 10% lower than Suzuki’s current compact cars.

As a result, the petrol-powered Regina is able to achieve an astonishing fuel consumption figure of just 3.1 litres/100 km, using the JC08 test cycle, with CO2 emissions as low as 70 g/km, measured using the New European Driving Cycle.

Another innovative take on the motoring future to be unveiled at the Tokyo expo is the Suzuki Q-concept, a two-seater micro car that’s been designed to fill the gap between conventional motorcycles and motor cars.

Aimed at urban commuters who travel within a radius of no more than 10 km, the Q-concept is only 2.5 metres long, and offers a variety interior configurations.

By default, it allows a tandem seating arrangement for two, but it can also carry a parent in front and two toddlers at the back. Alternatively, the rear section can be used for cargo only, turning the Q-concept into the perfect urban delivery vehicle.

The Q-concept is smaller and more manoeuvrable than a car, but more comfortable and versatile than a motorcycle, thus creating a new, affordable and user-friendly mobility solution for urban environments.

Suzuki’s theme of innovation at the Tokyo Motor Show continues with the Swift EV Hybrid, a compact electric vehicle based on the current Swift hatchback, but equipped with an engine-driven generator.

The vehicle uses an electrically powered range extender that allows the Swift EV to be driven for distances of up to 30 km on battery power alone, while it also reduces overall fuel consumption by extending the range of the car during normal operation.

Tokyo will also mark the world premiere of the Swift Sport in five-door hatchback form, following the reveal of the three-door Swift Sport at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year.

Offering a high-performance, high-efficiency engine, and a sports-tuned suspension, the new Swift Sport delivers thrilling dynamics whilst retaining the Swift’s reputation for efficiency and practicality.

The 42nd Tokyo Motor Show takes place from 2 to 11 December at the Tokyo International Exhibition Centre.

Toyota is using the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show to reinforce its position as an environmental technology leader with one compact hybrid (available soon in Japan) and three concept cars - one available in the near future, one mid-term and one way out there.

Now...
Premiering is the Toyota AQUA (also called the Prius C in certain markets), a compact-class hybrid vehicle that aims to provide the joys of hybrid vehicle ownership, such as superior fuel efficiency, user friendliness and fun at an affordable price.

The AQUA combines the features of a five-seater compact car with hybrid drive to offer groundbreaking fuel efficiency of approximately 2.9 litres per 100km (under the Japanese JC08 test cycle).

At 3.995 mm long, the AQUA’s stylish proportions and minimised height enhance its aerodynamic performance while still offering interior comfort and ample luggage capacity. The state-of-the-art, compact and lightweight hybrid system combines a 1.5-litre engine with a high-output motor to create the most efficient hybrid powertrain yet. Moreover the system has been packaged to give a low centre of gravity for outstanding handling, agile manoeuvrability and enjoyable operation.

Following its launch in Japan, scheduled for December 2011, the AQUA or Prius C will be sequentially rolled out to other regions worldwide, except the European market. Toyota SA Motors is currently investigating the feasibility of widening the Prius range, however, this will not take place in the short term.

Near Future…
Based on the Toyota iQ, the FT-EV III (Future Toyota – Electric Vehicle III) is a four-seater electric vehicle concept suitable for short-distance trips. Toyota is developing EV technology with the aim of launching a vehicle suitable for short-distance travel in 2012.  Equipped with a lithium-ion battery, the FT-EV III achieves an estimated cruising range of 170 km on a fully charged battery (under the Japanese JC08 test cycle).

GILDENHUYS FINISHES GRAND SEASON ON A HIGH

BMW’s second season in the top echelon of South African motorcycle racing came to a successful end at Zwartkops Raceway west of Pretoria on Saturday.

In the final race meeting of the season, newly crowned Superbike champion Greg Gildenhuys (BMW Motorrad Motorsport BMW S1000RR) finished third and second in the two 12-lap races that were a highlight of the ninth round of the WesBank Super Series.

The 22-year-old from Boskruin in Gauteng, who wrapped up the title at the penultimate round at Zwartkops two weeks earlier, was disappointed not to have finished his great season with another win, but was naturally delighted with his second successive championship win aboard the big BMW.  At the end of the day his final overall winning margin ahead of second placed Chris Leeson (Kawasaki) was a comfortable 38 points. Former champion Sheridan Morais was third with 240 points.

“It would have been nice to have finished with a win today, but we’re happy.  It’s been a super awesome season,” said Gildenhuys.  He finished on the podium in 17 of the 18 races, winning four and finishing second 11 times.

Leeson (Kawasaki) won both races on Saturday from first on the starting grid after he and Gildenhuys were separated by just 0,043 second in the race for pole position.

Gildenhuys was again let down by slow starts in both 12-lap races, recovering from fifth in race one to finish third and from fourth in race two to take the runner-up spot at the chequered flag.

The factory bike was well supported by a number of privateers during the season.  Most successful of these was the Rocket 88/Ryder Motorrad BMW S1000RR of James Egan.  In his first season in Superbikes after stepping up from the Supersport category, the KwaZulu-Natal rider finished a fine fourth overall with 218 points and seven podium places, including two seconds.

Nicholas Grobler (Jonway BMW S1000RR) was a regular top-five finisher and scored three podium places on his way to fifth overall with 207 points.

Ryan Simon Ottens (Northside Motorcycles BMW S1000RR) also impressed after making his Superbike debut in the penultimate round at Zwartkops on November 5 with two seventh place finishes.  He followed this up in the final round with another seventh and a fifth in the last race of the season.

“Congratulations to Greg and his team on their second successive championship on our S1000RR superbike,” said Rob Holder, general manager of BMW Motorcycles.  “And a big thank-you to the BMW privateers who gave our official factory entry such great support.  They have all done BMW proud and we look forward to the 2012 season and continued BMW success.”

AUDI TAKES PRODUCTION CHAMPIONSHIP

THERE is a new Bridgestone Production Car champion in class A, and it is Audi S4 quattro racer Michael Stephen (A3 – Engen Xtreme). Stephen wrapped up the 2011 championship title in a duel with fellow Audi S4 quattro competitor, Johan Fourie (A14 – IndyOil), at the final round of the series at Zwartkops Raceway.

After four action-packed races Stephen emerged victorious having claimed enough points to clear his rival and lift the winner’s trophy. Stephen won three of the four races and finished second in one to claim first overall for the day – a very high note on which to finish the season.

“Going into the final round with that one point difference to Johan as the championship leader put huge pressure on me,” says Stephen. “It was a huge relief to post the results and go from what could be to what is – a very satisfactory result and I’m sure it’ll only sink in by Monday.

“I’ve always said that, having studied mechanical engineering, that is my job, racing is my hobby,” says Stephen. “Here you get out what you put in and, having put so much time and effort into the car it is very rewarding, almost like winning a double championship!”

For Fourie the weekend was rather bittersweet, going from the championship lead to a second place for the season. While a second for the season cannot be considered a bad result, for Fourie there was the potential for so much more.

“We had lots of technical problems this weekend,” says Fourie. “When that happens it really counts against you as overtaking is very difficult at Zwartkops. Having to start at the back of the grid didn’t help and when the engine temperature soared I decided it would be better to park it.

“Yes, it was a bad weekend, but we still finished well ahead of the field so it has still been a good result for the year.”

Fourie is not the only one of the Audi S4 quattro competitors to experience some uphill at the final round of the season. For Tschops Sipuka (A4 – Engen Xtreme) things did also not go according to plan.

“The Audi S4 quattro was absolutely on song this weekend,” says Sipuka. “The guys in the workshop did a really good job as the car has never felt so good. Technical problems with the fuel pipe crept in though, and that caused problems.

“That fuel pipe meant the fuel pump itself was suffering and the effort simply killed the pump. It was shaping up to be a great weekend, but sometimes you just have to accept that things just do not go as you expect them too and you work towards the next event.”

The final event of the season proved tough on all the drivers, but the Audi S4 quattro competitors showed that a strong end of season comes from having a strong presence at every race meeting – strong enough to claim both the first and second places in class A of the Bridgestone Production Car championship.

DAIMLER FINALLY KILLS MAYBACH FOR S-CLASS

Don't Copy From This Blog...

Previous rumours of Daimler’splan to get rid of the super luxury Maybachbrand seem to have been confirmed. An interview in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung quotes Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche as saying that the company has come to the conclusion that Maybach is not as viable as previously thought. That really spells the second death of Maybach.

Zetsche reckons the nextS-Class, scheduled to be sold in South Africa in late 2012/ early 2013, is so advanced and opulent that it could conceivably replace the Maybach. There are only two Maybach models, the 57 and the 62, both denoting car length (57 equals 5.7 metres). Zetsche hinted that other body shapes concerning the S-Class will be introduced to add to the sedan, Coupe (CL-Class) and long-wheel-base (LWB) currently on offer. That could mean a Shooting Brake and a Convertible among others.

Mercedes-Benz is trailing both BMW and Audi in premium sales, but aims to regain top spot by the year 2020 through selling more smaller cars like the new B-Class and upcoming A-Class. Both BMW Group, owner of Rolls-Rolls and Volkswagen Group, owner of Audi and Bentley, are experiencing unprecedented successes with their super luxury brands. Why Maybach has failed is the stuff of university studies. However, IN4RIDE hazards a guess at two reasons. One is that Maybach simply does not have the same historical heritageowned by Rolls-Royce and Bentley in the minds of the buying public. Secondly, there are far too many commonstyling and features between the S-Class and Maybach for customers to shell out at least an extra R2 million for the latter.

MORE PREMIUM 2012 BMW 1 SERIES HATCH LAUNCHED IN SA

Don't Copy From This Blog...

Protected by Copyscape Plagiarism Detection

BMW designer Nico Huet is French by origin. And the Frenchare well-known for their chic style, less brash, more detail. He’s the guy who designed the exterior of the all-new 1 Series. While I personally liked the previous car – penned by American Chris Chapman, some criticised it for its loud personality. Whatever your preference, the new 1 Series looks set to be universally liked. What that means is that BMW has another winner at the dealership.

The devil is the detail they say. At this level of the game one doesn’t expect Rolls-Royce detail, given the relatively humble budgetone would allocate to a 1er. Yet, there it is, the devil. Have a quick look at one of the interior pictures posted above, the one Sport and Eco Pro. Notice how it’s played out to look like a piece of a chain. Ridges on the dashboard, hidden troughs behind buttons and handles; such details as to make the car so mysteriouslydesirable.

I skipped into the interior because that’s where drivers and passengers will find themselves. But the exterior, Huet’s domain, is where the general publicmeets 1 Series. Impressed they will be in the majority at least. While I had my reservations when I first saw official pictures lit on the interweb, in the metal/ flesh this car looks positively in business. Bashful on the front end with those large headlights, an integratedfront bumper that runs up to the wavy bonnet, C-shaped kinks on the side, and a zig-zagrear end. It retains its masculinity via a near-couperear silhouette, at the same time showing some feminine touches. That’s French.

Another criticism of the old car was interior space. Trying all the seats I got the impression that BMW considered these critics first. Being 4.3 metres long, 1.4m high, 1.76m wide and with a wheelbase of almost 2.7mmeans a conscious decision was made to elevate roominess levels. The 1 – codenamed F20 – feels so roomy it actually rivals the current 3 Series (E90). Immediately the driver will feel like they are meshed into the chassis, as if they are part of the car itself. Fortunately also, BMW, at least this time, thought about the low-endengines too.

With the new 116iand 118i, both available at the Mzansi launch, a 1.6-litre turbopetrol was used. It’s the same 1.6 turbo found in the MINI range, as well as certain Peugeot and Citroen cars. In the 116i it sends off 100kW (up from 85kW) at 4400rpm, with peak torque of 220Nm (previously 150Nm) available between 1350rpm and 4300rpm. Gee, how drivable is this car, especially at Gauteng altitude where cars with no turbos can lose up to 17% of their power. Responsive and lag-free, just the way we like ‘em. BMW says it will close down 0 – 100km/h in 8.5 seconds, succumb to physics at 210 km/h. An average fuel consumption figure of 5.6 litres per 100km is envisaged, corresponding to 130 g/km in C02 emissions.

When I drove the 118i things got even more delightful, thanks to the same motor now delivering 125kWat 4800rpm and maximum torque of 250Nmbetween 1500rpm and 4500rpm. Sure felt like 125kW as I tested acceleration and overtaking prowess on different road surfaces. Some might find this model enough without seeking more horses uptown later. There we should be talking 120i with 135kW and 128i making 180kW. More on these later. At this point it’s good to know the 118i is claimed to run from 0 – 100km/h in 7.4 seconds, stop running at 225km/h. Efficiency is 6.4 litres per 100km, tested. A knob labelled Eco Pro adds to the range by facilitating a more economical driving style. A first for the class is the optional 8-speed automatic gearbox, while the standard remains an engaging 6-speed manual.

New 1 Series, just like old 1 Series, is primed for bigger things as far as handling goes. The chassis features a double-joint cross-strut front axle with MacPherson struts and sway bars that’s high in aluminium content, while the rear is a five-link axle. With a wider track, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and almost 50:50 weight distribution, there could not be any argument against how this car takes on curvy roads.

I spoke of comfort earlier, something not readily associated with the old 1er. Other nice-to-haves include iDrive with optional Google Maps, Bluetooth connectivity that not only allows for in-car speaker conversations, but also plays music stored in your connected mobile device as well. The rest are things like Lane Departure Warning, Park Distance Controland Collision warning among others. Quite lovely to see such “big car” features here, even though most will cost extra.

Earlier we mentioned the 120i and 128i as possibilities. A certainty is the imminent arrival of the 120d which displaces 2.0-litres and features variable-geometry turbocharger, common-rail magnetic-valve direct injection. Max thrust is 135kW realised at 4000rpm and 380Nm between 1750rpm and 2750rpm, returning a claimed consumption of 4.6 litres per 100km and 120 g/km in C02 emissions. There are rumours that for the first time, the hatch will also get a 135i model with over 240kW, as well as a 1M with over 270kW. Both are possible I reckon.

BMW has taken the new 1 Series to a higher plain whereupon direct rivals such as Audi’s next A3 and Mercedes-Benz’s A-Class will have to perch themselves to make any meaningful contribution. It is of serious premium class, has a very sporty disposition and much improved engines. The only thing standing on its way on the staircase to segment dominance is how price-sensitivethe target market is.
